Most people experience a Passivhaus building before they understand what it is. The temperature doesn’t fluctuate. There are no cold walls in winter, no heat radiating through glass in summer. The air is clean and still — not because the windows are closed, but because a heat recovery system is continuously bringing filtered fresh air in and conditioning it before it enters the room.
It is quieter than a conventionally built house. It holds its temperature without being asked to. It asks very little of the heating and cooling systems — which is why those systems are rarely running. The building does the work passively, through its construction, not through its equipment.

Passivhaus is a rigorous, independently verified performance standard developed by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt, Germany. A certified building must meet specific, tested targets for heating and cooling demand, airtightness, and primary energy use — confirmed by pressurisation tests and energy modelling, not estimated.
It is achievable across a wide range of building types, climates and budgets. The standard defines the outcome. The architecture determines how you get there.
Insulation
Continuous high-performance insulation wraps the entire building envelope — walls, roof and floor — without gaps or interruptions.
Airtightness
A sealed, tested envelope prevents uncontrolled air movement. Every penetration — pipe, cable, duct — is addressed with precision and confirmed by blower door test.
Glazing
Triple-glazed, thermally broken windows eliminate heat transfer through glass and frames — the weak points of any conventional envelope.
Thermal bridges
Every structural connection that penetrates the thermal envelope is interrupted. Cold conducts through steel, concrete and timber — and must be designed out.
Ventilation
Heat recovery ventilation delivers continuous filtered fresh air without energy loss. The building breathes properly — without opening a window, without draughts.
It doesn’t have to cost more. It requires thinking more carefully, earlier.
OA pursues Passivhaus not because it is fashionable, but because it solves real problems. Buildings that are expensive to run, uncomfortable in extreme weather, and that degrade quickly are problems that get designed in at the beginning and lived with for decades. Passivhaus is a way of designing them out.
It doesn’t have to cost more. It requires thinking more carefully, earlier — about the envelope, the orientation, the details, the sequence of decisions. The premium, where it exists, is a one-time investment in construction quality. The return is a building that performs better and costs less to run for the life of the building.
We don’t impose it. We explain what it offers, we make the case honestly, and we work with experienced Passivhaus consultants and certifiers to deliver it when a client chooses to pursue it. Materia is certified Passive House Plus — the second tier of the standard, requiring significant on-site renewable energy generation in addition to meeting all Classic targets. It was achieved on a project with an existing retained heritage structure, demonstrating that the standard is reachable in the complexity of a real Melbourne site, not just an ideal one.
